AMC History and Potential Impact
Applied Strategies CEO Sandy Wrobel spoke at the Vaccine Forum 2010 conference in Washington, DC,
on the Advance Market Commitment (AMC) Innovative Financing Mechanism.
Having been involved with the AMC financial modeling from the beginning,
Sandy provided an overview of the five-year journey from concept launch to vaccine supply
and provided perspective on the potential benefits and challenges. Over the last five years, significant effort has been invested by a broad set of stakeholders to:
- Understand the financial implications of an AMC to vaccine suppliers, donors,
and developing world countries for both early- and late-stage vaccine programs,
including malaria, TB, pneumococcal, rotavirus, HPV, and HIV
- Select the AMC Pilot vaccine (pneumococcal vaccines)
- Raise funds to support the Pilot AMC
- Seek supplier input on the AMC terms and advocate for their active participation in the Pilot
- Design and execute legal agreements between key constituents (i.e., GAVI, World Bank, UNICEF, donors)
- Establish the official demand forecast to inform vaccine procurement efforts.
